While Chinese exports to Laos consist mainly of manufactured goods, including machinery, electrical equipment, metals, vehicles, chemicals and textiles, Laos’ exportsWorld Integrated Trade Solution – Laos country analysis, 2023 to China are dominated by raw materials, such as wood, minerals and food products. Trade in agricultural products, some farmed on lands still contaminated by unexploded bombs dating back to the United States’ 1964–1973 covert military operation, has gained momentum. Although still in its early stages, the nascent role of the Laos-China Railway in China-Southeast Asia trade flows could eventually support a gradual shift from road freight powered by fossil fuel to electrified rail transport.
